Florida Keys

Click on either map for a larger version.     Main Road map through of all the Keys         Key West Street Map

Why would we put the down the Keys as a destination? There is plenty to occupy you for a few days.

Families will find lots of to look at by day. There are Museums, Historic sites, the Southern most point of land in the continental USA as well as many activities. The closing of the day is traditionally done by watching the performers at the Sunset Celebration on the Mallory Dock,  this heralds in the night life that Key West is famous for. Be forewarned that there is a mixture of life styles evident even on the streets, some of which may be considered alternate. Been to Mardi-Gras in New Orleans? Not a whole lot of difference between the French quarter and Duval St.. except the architecture. You may even find some reveling.

Many " Famous people" and "Characters" find their way to the Keys  and Key West has and has always had the highest concentration of them. Pappy Hemingway once lived there and his house complete with descendents of his 6 toed cats is open to the public. More recently Jimmy Buffet could be bumped into, along with many celebrities who come to do the scene. It's kind of like an fish crate version of Hollywood Blvd.

Don't forget that the Keys are just that Keys. Most of the Keys a laid back tropical Island life which center around the crystal clear warm water that surrounds them.

If you like the Keys you may want to stop in at Coconut Grove in Miami and Southbeach on Miami beach; they're a little cleaner and more upscale.

East Coast Greenway - A 2600 mile  Cyclist and hiking trail from Maine to Key West, that is being compiled by the East Coast Greenway Alliance. The first ever cyclist trip of the entire route was completed early Nov 2004. Because much of the trail run through urban area it has to share it with some automotive traffic, but where necessary ,to do so routes with the least amount of traffic are designated as part of the greenway. For a short bio on the group that completed the trip click here. (note you may be asked if you want to update a Vector Rendering plug-in, we did and it seemed to be safe). You will be amazed at the diversity of the participant and special kudos to Anne Kruimer who used a modified semi-recumbent tandem hand operated bike. Anne was injured and lost the use of her legs in 1992 but she hasn't let that stop her.
