Safety in a Lightning Storm

Lightning kills more people than does drowning and a disproportionate number of victims are golfers out in the open. So what do you do when a sudden thunderstorm comes up?

Avoid taking shelter under a lone or the tallest tree in a group as lightening most commonly strikes the tallest objects.

Do not stroll in the rain with an umbrella.

Get indoors if at all possible,  stay away from the windows and do not use electrical appliances or the telephone.

Get inside a vehicle and stay away from the windows. The tires are supposed to insulate it from a strike, but this is not foolproof but the  metal shell will conduct  the current around the outside and to the nearest source of ground.

If you are stuck out in the open such as a field or desert then get low to the ground but do not lay down flat which would be the natural thought in getting low but it is most advisable to  squat down, put your head between your knees and wrap your arms around your legs.
